What's going on with all the new houses?

Main Post:

Hey, German here.

Last week I travelled through Slovenia. Our toll vignetta wasn't active yet, so we drove from Graz (Austria) to Zagreb (croatia) through the countryside.

I was extremely impressed by all the relatively new houses that were obviously built recently, as in the past 5 years.

What's going on with that? How is that possible? What exactly happened to allow that kind of wealth to spread to the general population?

I don't bedruge you. I'm glad that happens in Europe. I'm just curious because it seems like this kind of thing is lacking in other countries like Italy and Germany. And I'm honestly a little bit jealous, too lol.

Btw: I visited lake Bled after we came back from Croatia and it's just beautiful. Thank you for your hospitality.

Top Comment: It is cheaper to build a new house than buy it.

Why do all new houses, regardless of builder, look the same? Most houses have a recessed entryway surrounded by a garage and "den/office/bonus room".

I'm in the Midwest. why did the world settle on this layout?

Builders pick what's the most popular style at the time and just replicate it. I'm in the NE and we have Cape Cods everywhere cause that's what was standard for decades. There's 1960s neighborhoods full of nothing but the same brick rancher and split levels over and over. Your average person just doesn't care about uniqueness. They want what works for them, what's cheap, and what's in style/good for resale.

90% of the population gives zero fucks and doesn't notice what we (architects) do unless something comes crashing down on their heads. And boy do we hate to admit that.
